KOKOMO, Indiana — A joint venture between Stellantis and Samsung SDI will build its first North American electric vehicle battery production plant in Kokomo, creating 1,400 jobs. The companies expect to open the facility, called Star Plus Energy, in 2025. The project will add to Kokomo’s growing list of firsts as it becomes a hub for auto manufacturing and electric vehicles.
The move will benefit the city in many ways, including housing, education and transportation. As the project draws closer, local leaders are working to ensure residents have all the resources they need. IU Bloomington, for example, will offer Korean language classes to employees at the company. It will also work with IU Kokomo to educate locals on everyday Korean culture. The institute is continuing a long tradition of teaching about the culture, which started in 1962 at IU. It was one of the first institutions in the nation to do so.
