Along the barrier islands and coastal areas of Georgia, shell rings are circular or semi-circular deposits of shell (primarily oyster), soil, and other artifacts that Native Americans created during the Late Archaic Period. These archaeological features are widely distributed throughout the Southeastern United States and have been interpreted in various ways. Some scholars have interpreted them as evidence for year-round village occupation and a social hierarchy while others have viewed them as sites of ceremonies or feasts.
The current research on Georgia’s shell rings reveals that they may have served as common domestic structures rather than rare monuments. We use a deep learning approach (Mask R-CNN) to systematically explore the spatial extent of ring building practices, leveraging multiple datasets and analytical methods to improve site identification. As a result, the geographic range of known shell rings expands significantly and our results suggest that they were far more common than previously recorded. seashell ring
