What Does an Electrical Contractor Do?

Posted on October 12, 2023

A person or firm that performs specialized construction work related to the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems. This includes high-voltage power transmission and low-voltage lighting. Some electrical contractors also focus on integrated building systems such as back-up power, wireless network, telecommunications, and security, climate control, and audio/video installations.

Some electrical contractors also provide consulting services to help clients with their projects. These services may include helping them select the best electrical components and providing them with estimates on installation costs. The electrical contractor may also act as a project supervisor to ensure that the job is being completed to the client’s specifications and in a timely manner.

To become an electrical contractor, a person typically needs to complete training as an electrician. This usually involves completing an apprenticeship program or working as an assistant to an experienced electrical contractor. Upon graduation, an individual can apply for a license to become an electrical contractor in their state.

Before an electrical contractor begins work on a project, they normally review the blueprints for the site. These expansive technical schematics reveal all of the electrical wiring, circuit breakers, switches and outlets that are needed for the job. The electrical contractor then customarily meets with the general contractor or owner to determine if there are any special electrical requirements not noted on the blueprints that must be addressed.

Once the electrical contracting work has been approved by the project manager, an electrician will begin to install the wiring in the walls of a building or other structure. They customarily double-check every wiring path and connection for safety and to ensure that it meets the building codes. They will often use a wide variety of hand tools to complete their work, including screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers and hacksaws.

If the electrical contractor is a business owner, they may need to develop and implement marketing strategies to attract potential clients. They may need to advertise in trade publications, on the internet and through social media. An electrical contractor can also choose to join a trade association to stay up-to-date on the latest industry news and trends.

In addition to developing marketing strategies, electrical contractors also need to be able to manage their projects and teams effectively. This can require strong organizational skills, communication skills and attention to detail.

Electrical contractor software can help with many of these tasks. It allows for real-time scheduling, dispatching and tracking of jobs. It can also enhance operational efficiency by allowing for seamless quoting, invoicing and payment processing. Additionally, it can provide valuable reporting and analytics to help an electrical contractor understand their business and make data-driven decisions for growth. Some of the top electrical contractor software solutions include UpKeep, QuickBooks, and Jobber. These software applications allow users to create and track work orders, communicate with employees in the field, and improve customer relations. In addition, they can track labor costs, inventory and materials, and integrate with accounting software to simplify financial management.
